For some this may seem a bit unfair, but keep in mind that the re-buy value will go back into the prize pool – which means that these types of tournaments can have a huge amount of money to be won. Another thing to remember is many new fish love this feature and will continually buy back in, to recoup some losses.
When should you re-buy?
An experienced player enters these types of tournaments knowing full well they will more than likely re-buy and they might do it more than once. The fact is all poker players are human and sometimes make mistakes. It may also be a night where it seems you just don’t have lady luck close by – buying back in just gives you the chance to get back into the action and possibly turn your luck around.
You may also take notice that quite often players will test their luck early in the game. Just knowing that you can re-buy can take the stress off if worrying about money. This is also a great way to test out your opponents and categorize them. You can find out who is aggressive or better yet who the ‘fishies’ are!
Overview
During the first hour of the tournament, players are allowed to make as many re-buys as they like. After the hour has passed, players are only allowed to make a final re-buy and this is referred to as an ‘add-on’ in Hold’em.
If you are sitting on a high-stack of chips, obviously you will want to avoid an add-on. However, a player who is considerably short-stacked will welcome the add-on with open arms. It’s best to always think before you re-buy and consider your options. After all, chasing losses is not exactly the best of moves.
